University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center is at the forefront of advancements in gastrointestinal cancer. Our physicians are national and international leaders in the field, developing new strategies for diagnosis and treatment. At UH Seidman Cancer Center, five-year gastrointestinal cancer survival rates have exceeded the national average for more than 20 years.
We maintain high standards of excellence in research and clinical care. UH Seidman Cancer Center is part of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, a Comprehensive Cancer Center designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). This means that our center consistently demonstrates a leading commitment to quality, training, technology, staffing and research.
In addition, because we are one of only seven centers that provides patients with access to NCI early phase I and II clinical trials, we offer individuals unique treatment opportunities before they are available at other institutions.
Unique, Multidisciplinary Approach to Patient Care
UH Seidman Cancer Center brings the expertise of a multidisciplinary team to each individual. Each patient's case is presented at weekly tumor board meetings. Participating team members share their expertise to reach a consensus for treatment. The team is comprised of multiple specialists including, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists and surgical oncologists. Our patients may see multiple specialists, depending on their individualized care plan, who work together to create the most effective, comprehensive solution. These team members may include, surgical, medical and radiation oncologists, plastic surgeons, oncology nurses, dietitians, and social workers.
Minimally Invasive Techniques for Shorter Recoveries
At UH Seidman Cancer Center, minimally invasive surgery is an increasingly preferred option. Our surgeries often involve only a single small incision, resulting in less pain, less scarring, shorter hospital stays and quicker recoveries.
The emergence of noninvasive technologies like laparoscopy, video imaging and other state-of-the-art surgical techniques has rapidly advanced the fight against gastrointestinal cancer at UH Seidman Cancer Center. Our laparoscopic surgeons have pioneered many of the techniques used by other surgeons in the field.

Our surgeons can remove tumors that previously would have been considered untreatable. They achieve this through the use of preoperative chemotherapy and radiation. Our surgical suites are fully equipped for intraoperative radiation, which involves applying intensive radiation to the tumor during surgery. This treatment option is available at only a few healthcare institutions nationwide.
A Center of Excellence for Pancreatic Cancer
UH Seidman Cancer Center has been nationally recognized as an Academic Center of Excellence by the National Pancreas Foundation (NPF). Following a rigorous audit review, NPF Centers are awarded for multidisciplinary treatment of pancreatic cancer with a focus on the best possible outcomes and improved quality of life. These Centers of Excellence combine the expertise of pancreas surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists and interventional radiologists, along with patient-focused programs such as pain management, psychosocial support and nutrition.

Cytoreductive Surgery (CRS) With Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) at UH Seidman Cancer Center
Sometimes gastrointestinal cancer and certain other abdominal or pelvic cancers can spread to the peritoneum – the membrane that lines the abdomen cavity. When this occurs, the condition is known by such names as peritoneal disease, peritoneal cancer, peritoneal malignancy and peritoneal carcinomatosis.
Many patients with peritoneal cancer benefit considerably from cytoreductive surgery (CRS) with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). CRS is the surgical removal of the cancerous tumor or tumors from the abdomen or pelvis. HIPEC is a type of chemotherapy in which a heated solution containing an anti-cancer drug is delivered directly into the abdominal cavity following CRS to destroy any leftover cancer cells.
A high-volume location for CRS HIPEC treatment, UH Seidman Cancer Center is one of a few select cancer centers in the country to offer this groundbreaking, life-extending therapy.
