Getting Started

Our Multidisciplinary Team Helps Each Patient Get Started on the Right Path Toward Recovery

At University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, we understand hearing that you have cancer is very scary. You have just been told that you need surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or a clinical trial, and it can be very overwhelming trying to figure out what to do next. We are here to help guide you through this process. You have chosen the right team for your care. We treat cancer every day. It is our specialty and our expertise.

We understand that you are anxious to see the physician team and get started with your treatment. It matters where you go first for your treatment options. We offer you a supportive environment to start you down the road to health. At the very beginning, before you have surgery, chemo, radiation or enroll in a clinical trial, you need to have a specialty care team evaluate your specific type of cancer and develop a treatment plan that is custom tailored to you.

Every patient’s cancer is unique; that is why we practice personalized care in a multidisciplinary setting. That means before any surgery, chemo, radiation or clinical trial treatment options are given, our patients’ cases are discussed in a weekly meeting with the team of doctors, nurses, social workers and others to evaluate your type of cancer and provide the best possible treatment options for you. With this team, you have your second and third opinions all discussed. We work with you to inform you of your choices and help you make the decision that meets your care goals.

Your First Visit

Patients will understandably be anxious and scared before their first visit after a cancer diagnosis. To help ease fears, we created a guide for patients and their families to help prepare them for this first important step on the road to cancer recovery. Information on Your First Visit includes what to bring with you to your appointment, what to expect, questions to ask your doctor, and much more.
