Why do I need a second medical opinion?

If you are faced with serious health decisions or choices about advanced treatment options, a online second opinion can give you peace of mind. Most physicians encourage patients to seek second opinions. Sometimes the new physician can suggest an alternate treatment that may work for your condition. Other times, the physician may change the diagnosis.

Will the second opinion confirm the diagnosis and/or treatment?

A second opinion may simply confirm a first diagnosis or treatment recommendation, but that does not mean it is without value. If more than one physician agrees on your course of treatment, it can be reassuring to you as a patient. A second opinion can also be helpful because another doctor may explain things in a way that is easier to understand.

Do I need my doctor’s permission to get a second opinion?

If you reside outside the state of Ohio, a consultation form signed by your local physician is required. During the Online Second Opinion Program process, our doctors will review the information provided in your medical records. The results of the review will be shared with your local physician. If you reside within Ohio, a consultation form is not required.

How quickly can I get a second opinion?

Your UH Online Second Opinion will be delivered to you in 10 to 14 business days after all requested medical records are received.

How much does a online second opinion cost?

The cost of a UH second opinion is $550, with an initial $200 non-refundable processing fee. You will be charged the remaining $350 once your online second opinion is complete. If a pathology or radiology interpretation by physicians is necessary, there will be additional charges. You may pay using major credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express and Discover).

Will my health plan cover my online second opinion?

Currently, Medicare, Medicaid and most health plans do not cover the costs of a online second opinion. Therefore, the online second opinion services are offered as a self-pay service. By submitting your credit card information, you authorize us to charge your credit card for any fees and services associated with the online second opinion as they become due. If you have questions about paying for a online second opinion, our staff will be happy to assist you.

Does my state of residence affect my ability to obtain an online second opinion from University Hospitals?

Yes. Due to the variation in laws surrounding the practice of medicine, University Hospitals is unable to provide an online second opinion to persons who reside in or have a current address in the following states or territory: Guam, Iowa, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, New York and North Dakota. Although we are unable to provide an online second opinion, University Hospitals would be happy to assist you in making an in-person appointment with one of our specialists.
