Clinical Experience and Research

The two-year experience blends clinical and research time. One month of dedicated research occurs in the first year, two months in the second year. The remainder is clinical time. Each month allows for a specific elective experience, including:

  • Adolescent medicine
  • Behavioral medicine
  • Cardiology/exercise testing
  • Clinical anatomy
  • Foot and ankle
  • Hand/upper extremity
  • Musculoskeletal radiology
  • Neuromusculoskeletal medicine/OMM
  • Pediatric orthopaedics
  • Rehabilitation
  • Rheumatology
  • Spine
  • Sports orthopaedics

Fellows must complete a research course. A full-time statistician is available to assist in data analysis. Grant funding is available through the Department of Pediatrics FRAP awards.

  • Primary Care Sports Medicine Conference (weekly)
  • Pediatric Fellows Conference (monthly)
  • Pediatric Orthopaedic Clinical Conference (weekly)
  • Orthopaedic Grand Rounds (weekly)
  • NMM/OMM-Faculty Development Fellows Series (monthly)
  • Pediatric Grand Rounds (weekly)
  • Sports Medicine Journal Club (quarterly)

Seminars:

  • Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI)
  • Biostatistics
  • Musculoskeletal Anatomy

Team coverage:

This unique facet of the fellowship allows the participant to provide comprehensive care to athletes during pre-participation exams, in the training room and on the sidelines during games. Participating area schools include:

  • Beaumont High School
  • Bedford High School
  • Case Western Reserve University Athletics
  • Cleveland Heights High School
  • Hathaway Brown School
  • Lake Erie College
  • Laurel School
  • Richmond Heights High School
  • Ursuline College Athletics

A typical fellowship week includes:

  • Primary Care Sports Medicine clinic: Two days
  • Electives: One-two days
  • Research: One-half day
  • High school/college training room experience: One-half day
  • Game coverage: Evenings/weekends

All fellows have four weeks of vacation per year.
