Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program at UH Regional Hospitals Department of Medical Education

University Hospitals Regional Hospitals has a recently approved Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program by the American Osteopathic Association. This innovative osteopathic-focused training program will involve exposure to multiple clinical settings in the University Hospitals Health System.

The faculty for the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency program is led by our program director, Mirza Baig, MD, who is also the Medical Director of University Hospitals Rehabilitation Hospital. The Chief Medical Office at University Hospitals Regional Hospitals, Vicenta C. Gaspar-Yoo, MD, MBA is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist with expertise in Electrodiagnostic Medicine. Sami E. Moufawad, MD will lead the training in pain management and the incorporation of interventional procedures into Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Residency Program Features

Training programs at UH Regional Hospitals are committed to promoting osteopathic concepts, developing an academic atmosphere in a community setting and exposing all trainees to patients in urban, suburban and rural environments. The residency curriculum includes a linked traditional internship for the first year of training followed by three years dedicated to developing an osteopathic physical medicine and Rehabilitation specialist. Osteopathic principles and practices are integrated into the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation residency curriculum. Scholarly activities are incorporated into the residency, including formal research training and developing the skills to publish. The ultimate goal of the program is to train a clinically competent physiatrist to lead their rehabilitation team for excellent patient care in a community setting. There is a priority to develop physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists for Northeast Ohio and University Hospitals.

University Hospitals is a member of Lake Erie Consortium for Osteopathic Medical Training (LECOMT).
