Comprehensive Education

The Family Medicine Residency program at University Hospitals Regional Hospitals is approved for 15 residents. We are currently a 5-5-5 program. The residents have experiences at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center’s 900-bed teaching hospital, as well as University Hospitals Richmond, Bedford, Geauga, Geneva and Conneaut medical centers. They gain valuable experiences not only working with the inner city indigent care patients but also get to work with the rural Amish population.

We take advantage of UH Cleveland Medical Center by having the family medicine residents rotate in the neonatal intensive care unit, newborn nursery, pediatric emergency department, pediatric inpatient services and labor and delivery unit. There is a wealth of tertiary care experience for residents at UH Cleveland Medical Center.

We have dedicated didactics for all house staff every Thursday from noon to 5 p.m. We also have a CC/EM Grand Rounds every second Friday and a Tumor Board Grand Round every fourth Friday. This prepares the residents for their family medicine practice as well as board preparation. UH Regional Hospitals has also made a large investment in the Challenger online question bank for board review and rotation evaluations. Our board passage rate is 100 percent since the existence of the program.

The residents have quarterly journal clubs with family medicine attendings present. They also participate in community service rotations at multiple health fairs, event coverage and time spent at the free clinic. The hospital has purchased laptops for each family medicine resident to use for EMR, medical research and home call.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) is a priority that is integrated throughout residency, with our DME as the current President of the Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA). We have OMT Grand Rounds the first and third Friday of each month. Additionally, each first and third year resident is required to complete a research project with an OMT emphasis.

Each resident participates as a resident physician member of the University Hospitals Primary Care Institute Quality Assurance Committee, which is led by UH Primary Care Institute Regional Director, Larry Witmer, DO. They meet on a monthly basis to review medical cases that were voluntarily submitted for analysis, in order to determine if the standard of care was met and decide what appropriate actions would help to better the future patient care experience. Residents are tasked to review and present the cases to the whole panel. Each resident physician has an equal voice amongst other panel members in analysis of patient care quality issues and providing recommendations for the final disposition of the case. Being a member of this group allows for a powerful learning experience in both the practice of medicine and the art of complete patient care.

Our residents provide team coverage for several high schools in conjunction with the team physician. They are involved in pre-participation physicals for multiple high schools and event coverage such as the Color Fun Run, Cleveland Marathon and local health fairs.

We are currently working on expanding the Family Medicine Clinic site at our Bedford location with a future goal of having 51 percent of our residents utilizing this site as our primary continuity site. Residents are expected to develop a continuity panel of patients. We currently have six continuity clinic sites with well-established UH system physicians with the goal of providing adequate volume and a large scope of patient mix to attain 1,650 patient visits during residency.

Overall, the UH system has been very supportive of our family medicine program both economically and philosophically. They really see the benefit of having a strong family medicine program to enhance the growth of the entire system.
