Curriculum & Features

The first year of the emergency medicine residency is dedicated to the acquisition of the core emergency medicine knowledge base and the development of skills in the management of the emergent patient. The second and third years of training represent the progressive development of teaching and managerial skills within the Emergency Department.

Year One

At UH Regional Hospitals:

  • Emergency medicine: 16 weeks
  • General surgery: Four weeks

At UH Richmond Medical Center:

  • Internal medicine/ICU: Eight weeks
  • Critical care medicine: Four weeks

At UH Geauga Medical Center:

  • Obstetrics/Gynecology: Four weeks

At various sites:*

  • Pediatrics: Four weeks
  • Neuromusculoskeletal medicine (NMM)/osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM): Two weeks
  • Anesthesia: Two weeks
  • Rural selective: Four weeks
  • Surgical selective, orthopaedic surgery: Four weeks

Year Two

At UH Regional Hospitals:

  • Emergency medicine: 16 weeks

At UH Richmond Medical Center:

  • Internal medicine/ICU: Four weeks
  • Critical care medicine: Four weeks
  • Cardiology: Four weeks

At UH Bedford Medical Center:

  • Radiology: Two weeks

At UH Cleveland Medical Center:

  • Emergency medicine: Eight weeks

At Akron Children’s Hospital:

  • Pediatric emergency medicine: Four weeks

At various sites:*

  • Surgical selective, urology: Two weeks
  • Rural selective, anesthesia/pain management: Four weeks
  • Vacation/Electives: Four weeks

Year Three

At UH Regional Hospitals:

  • Emergency medicine: 16 weeks

At UH Richmond Medical Center:

  • Internal medicine/ICU: Four weeks

At UH Cleveland Medical Center:

  • Emergency medicine: Eight weeks

At Akron Children’s Hospital:

  • Pediatric emergency medicine: Four weeks

At Grant Medical Center (Columbus, Ohio):

  • Trauma/SICU: Four weeks

At various sites:*

  • Neurology: Four weeks
  • Rural selective, orthopaedics: Four weeks
  • Research (July CWRU course): Four weeks
  • Vacation/Electives: Four weeks

The majority of the final year is spent in the Emergency Department where senior residents have a supervisory role.

Year Four

At UH Regional Hospitals:

  • Emergency medicine: 24 weeks

At UH Cleveland Medical Center:

  • Emergency medicine: Eight weeks

At UH Regional Hospitals and UH Cleveland Medical Center:

  • Administration/toxicology: Four weeks

At various sites:*

  • Surgical selective, ENT: Two weeks
  • Surgical selective, ophthalmology: Two weeks
  • Rural selective: Four weeks
  • EMS: Four weeks
  • Vacation/Electives: Four weeks
