Of America’s 80,000 doctors of osteopathy, over 60 percent are primary care physicians (PCPs). By 2020, more than 100,000 DOs will be in active practice, but research shows there will still be a shortage of PCPs, most keenly felt in rural and inner-city areas.

Northeast Ohio’s University Hospitals is easing this shortage. The Department of Medical Education at University Hospitals Bedford and Richmond Medical Centers, campuses of UH Regional Hospitals, is committed to the enhancement of osteopathic principles and practice through our comprehensive internship, residency and fellowship programs:

UH Regional Hospitals Department of Medical Education’s multiple top-ranked AOA programs are dedicated to strong primary care and selected specialty training. Our attendings and administration value the integration of osteopathic principles and practices for all programs.

We offer NMM/OMM rotations for all interns. Comprehensive rotations for all learners include:

  • Internal medicine/ICU
  • Hematology/oncology
  • Emergency medicine
  • Neurology
  • Nephrology
  • General surgery
  • Wound care
  • Ophthalmology
  • OMM

Other features include:

  • Formal teaching services at UH Richmond Medical Center in Wound Care, Internal Medicine and General Surgery
  • Participation at UH Conneaut and Geneva medical centers to expose learners to medicine at a critical access site
  • A weekly grand round series
  • UH system-integrated training programs to offer a variety of clinical rotation settings, exposing each learner to urban, suburban and rural environments
  • A 24/7 inpatient-teaching internal medicine hospitalist service
  • Customized traditional internship curriculum to prepare for your chosen specialty
  • A diverse, accessible in-house staff
  • Required and supported research opportunities
  • Twenty days of paid time off (includes six holidays)
