My childhood was spent in the triple digit summers and beautiful winters of Tucson, Arizona. After spending 10 years in the desert, I decided that I would spend my college years in a more temperate climate and acquired my B.S in Biology from DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois. There, I developed my love for Chicago sports, particularly hockey’s Chicago Blackhawks and football’s Chicago Bears! Moving back home in 2004, I went to medical school in Tucson at the University of Arizona, and on the second day of orientation, I met my wonderful wife, Carrie. After finishing up medical school, I then took my talents to Lake Erie and started residency at Rainbow Babies & Children’s! After my chief residency year, I plan on pursuing a career in Pediatric Intensive Care, caring for the most critically ill children. The mentors, colleagues and most importantly friends I have made during my time at Rainbow are indescribable and have made for a wonderful time during residency. All of this while enjoying Cleveland’s amazing food, theater and sports has made for a great Northeast Ohio experience. I look forward to sharing with you why Rainbow has been a wonderful place to be!

Born and raised in Toledo, OH, I've since lived in North Carolina (undergrad at Duke), Washington DC, and Columbus, OH (medical school at Ohio State) before moving to Cleveland to do residency here at Rainbow. For me, Rainbow has provided the perfect balance of general and subspecialty training to prepare me for my next move to Memphis, where I'll be entering a hematology and oncology fellowship at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Cleveland has been a fantastic city these last 3 years. The food, both in terms of diversity and quality (and price), is fantastic. But what I really love about Cleveland is that I can always find something to do. Before my son was born, my wife and I might spend an evening seeing one of the Broadway shows that come to town 8-10 times a year or listening to our world renowned symphony (they perform 1 block from Rainbow and tickets are very attainable). If we craved the outdoors, we might head to the lake to jet ski or go hiking or biking in one of the many parks in the area. For Halloween, we'd head to Cedar Point to ride the roller coasters. On quieter nights, we'd go to a local wine bar. Since our son was born, we spend days at the Cleveland zoo (and its indoor rainforest, great in the winter) or check out different animals at the local farm park, or walk our neighborhood (a 10 minute walk from Rainbow) to a local playground for some family time. I look forward to meeting you on your visit, and don't hesitate to contact me by e-mail before or after if you have questions.

In coming to University Hospitals 3 years ago, I literally came back to where it all started. I was born at UH and lived in Cleveland with my 3 older sisters and 1 younger brother before we moved to Rochester, New York when I was 2 years old. I still have many extended family members in Cleveland and always considered it a second home while growing up in Rochester. Cheering for all the Cleveland sports teams through the years has certainly taught me the valuable lessons of patience and humility! In 2000, I moved to Saint Louis, Missouri for college and medical school and there I met my beautiful wife, Kate. In 2010, our son Matthew was born and he helps me become a better pediatrician every day! After my chief residency, I plan to go into private practice. Aside from cheering for Cleveland sports teams, I also enjoy running, playing basketball, reading, all sorts of music and going to movies. I have also been known to tell puns, which my co-workers will no doubt warn you can sometimes be "Payne-ful." I am excited that you are considering Rainbow for residency and will be glad to answer your questions and share with you why I am thrilled to be here!

Born at Metro hospital just across town and raised on the west side in Avon Lake, I am a Clevelander through and through. I did get to spend an exciting 4 years as an Ohio State undergrad (GO BUCKS!) before returning to Cleveland for medical school at Case Western Reserve University. I had planned to leave for residency, but the pull of the University Hospitals/Rainbow program (and meeting my wife, Michelle) was too strong to ignore. I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 years here as a Med/Peds resident and would not change a thing if asked to do it all over again. In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my wife and 1 year-old daughter, Madeline. My favorite aspects of Cleveland include the huge variety of awesome restaurants, Playhouse Square, and often painfully rooting for the Indians, Browns, and Cavs. I am thrilled to be spending a 5th (or 9th) year here as Med/Peds Chief Resident this upcoming year and know that we can prove what a wonderful place Rainbow can be. Next year, I will be leaving to pursue a fellowship in Pediatric Cardiology at Northwestern/Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, but Cleveland and Rainbow will always remain home.
