Tips to help make the surgical process easier for both you and your child
Ask questions of the professionals who will be involved. As a parent, you should know ahead of time what to expect and then be able to translate that information to your child in a way he or she will best understand it.
Allow your child to ask questions and express anxiety. Our experts can help you navigate difficult feelings and help you remain supportive, loving, and reassuring.
Be brief but honest. For very young children, a simple “you’re going to go to sleep so the doctors can make you feel better” may suffice. Older children may need a little more detail.
Keep in mind that your child will pick up on your emotions. Your strength, confidence, and peaceful attitude will mean the world to your child’s peace of mind.
Take advantage of all the services in Rainbow’s Child Life program to acclimate you and your child to the surroundings you’ll encounter in the hospital on the day of surgery.
If you are comfortable, take advantage of Rainbow’s policy to allow parents to remain with their children before and after surgery. Your presence is a source of strength and stability before she goes to sleep and when she wakes.
Depending on how long your child will be in the hospital, consider staying the whole time. Call (216) 844-1066 to arrange accommodations.
