Michael Anderson, MDMichael R. Anderson, MD FAAP

Dr. Michael Anderson is Vice President and Associate Chief Medical Officer at University Hospitals and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the Case Western Reserve School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. He is also a pediatric critical care specialist at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. 
In his role as Associate Chief Medical Officer at UH, Dr Anderson is charged with oversight of quality, risk management, credentialing and medical staff offices. He also assists the CMO in the daily operations of the nine-hospital UH system.

As a pediatric specialist, Dr. Anderson has been active at the local, state and national level in pediatric disaster readiness and response. Currently, Dr Anderson is pooling the talent of Ohio’s six children’s hospitals to form a disaster response team to serve as a state and federal asset in the wake of future disasters.   Through key partnerships at the state and federal levels, including the Ohio Children’s Hospital Association, the Ohio Hospital Association, the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Anderson is working to ensure that children’s needs are at the forefront of disaster medicine and create a disaster response team capable of caring for children during these times.

In 2008. Dr Anderson was appointed by President George W. Bush to the National Commission on Children and Disasters. This 10 member commission will analyze the United State’s readiness to care for children in disasters and issue recommendations to the President and Congress as to how to improve same.

In addition to disaster preparedness and response, Dr. Anderson’s research and clinical interests include national physician workforce, pediatric critical care transport and national health policy issues for children.  He has been awarded grant funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Emergency Medical Systems for Children (EMS-C). He has published on a variety of pediatric critical care topics including sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), care of the immunosupressed patient, and transport of the unstable pediatric patient.  Dr Anderson has brought his expertise to three national committees for the AAP and served as the chair of the Committee on Pediatric Workforce from 2004 to 2006.  In 2003, Dr. Anderson was appointed by the AAP to the United States Department of Health and Human Services/Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) expert panel on pediatric subspecialty workforce.

Dr. Anderson is a member of the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Education Committee and has earned several teaching awards at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and MetroHealth. He has spoken on a wide variety of pediatric topics to national organizations and serves as voice for children on Capital Hill through his child advocacy work with the National Association of Children’s Hospitals (NACH) and Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

In Cleveland, Dr. Anderson serves as Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) regional affiliate faculty and was appointed to the City of Cleveland Department of Public Safety Physician Advisory Board in 2003. He also was appointed medical director for the City of Willoughby Hills in 2006, and serves on the board of directors for the Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Fresh Air Camp for ventilator dependent children.

Dr. Anderson is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric critical care by the American Board of Pediatrics.  He earned his undergraduate degree from John Carroll University in 1986, where he was awarded the Beaudry Outstanding Senior Award, and earned his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 1990.  He completed his pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in 1993 and received the Sanford Cohen Outstanding Senior Award. Dr. Anderson completed a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in 1997, and currently is in his eleventh year as a member of the faculty.
