Pediatric Genetics Residency Program

Chairmen's Statement

The collaboration between the disciplines of Genetics and Pediatrics has been both historical and practical. For many years, Genetics Departments and Divisions were part of large departments of Pediatrics throughout the United States. Since the late 1980’s, the field of Genetics has grown substantially and Genetics has become its own Department in many academic medical centers. Close ties remain between the two disciplines, since a genetic basis has been established for many developmental processes and diseases relevant to pediatric practice. Much genetic research has focused on diseases that affect children, and provided new insights, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital has a long and proud history of being at the forefront of pediatric medicine and serves as one of the nation’s leading centers for training tomorrow’s pediatricians. The Center for Human Genetics at University Hospitals of Cleveland is likewise a national leader in clinical and basic science genetics, and since 1995 has maintained an active training program. In 1997, the two programs created the nation’s first accredited combined Pediatrics-Genetics residency in the United States. The purpose of this unique program is to train individuals in Pediatrics and Genetics who wish to pursue careers as Physician-Scientists. Our combined program provides clinical training and a mentored research environment, and is designed to develop independent investigators who will be leading academicians of the future. We encourage interested applicants to apply and visit with us.
