Fellows entering the Pediatric Nephrology Training Program at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital are well-trained excellent pediatricians who are board eligible and have graduated from accredited programs. The Division of Pediatric Nephrology treats children of all ages with a broad range of kidney/urologic diseases. The goal of the clinical portion of the fellowship program is for fellows to gain exposure to and develop expertise in the diagnosis and management of the full spectrum of diseases cared for by pediatric nephrologists, including acute/chronic glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome congenital urinary tract anomalies, inherited disorders of the urinary tract system, fluid and electrolyte abnormalities, chronic kidney disease, and end-stage renal disease, including dialysis and kidney transplantation.
On the inpatient service, fellows provide care to primary nephrology patients on the general pediatric medicine floors, and provide supervision and teaching to the pediatric residents and medical students caring for those patients. Fellows also perform consultations on renal/electrolyte disorders for patients on other services as well as those in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with the guidance of the pediatric nephrology faculty. Fellows have ample opportunities to develop the skills needed to manage acute renal failure, including competency in performing continuous renal replacement therapy/hemofiltration, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. Fellows will also gain competency in performing percutaneous renal biopsies. In the outpatient setting, our program provides for a longitudinal experience throughout the fellowship period. Fellows attend outpatient clinics once a week and are expected to assume primary care for children with a variety of general nephrology disorders, as well as dialysis and transplant patients. In addition, one rotation in each year of the training program is specifically devoted to the outpatient management of dialysis and transplant patients. Additional clinical training includes rotations in renal pathology, pediatric radiology and pediatric urology.
