Bryan Center for Pulmonary Diagnostics

The Pulmonary Diagnostic Center is part of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine in Case Western Reserve University, Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital and University Hospitals of Cleveland.

The Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory is located on the 6th floor of Rainbow Hospital in the KC & Ginny Bryan Center.  The laboratory is staffed by four Registered Respiratory Therapist and one Research Assistant.  The technical staff is highly motivated to work with sick children and possess good communication skills.

The laboratory performs all standard pulmonary function test including

The primary instrument in the laboratory is a Jaeger MasterScreen body plethysmograph system, which measures spirometry, lung volumes, and carbon monoxide diffusion capacity. The body plethysmograph system is supplemented by 2 Jaeger flow-sensing spirometers. Exhaled nitric oxide is measured by the Aerocrine NiOX. All instruments meet ATS Standards and are subjected to periodical quality control to ensure accurate and reproducible results.

Our laboratory uses the Collins Medical (IPL) system for measuring pulmonary function tests on infants and young children (less than 3 yrs.).  Forced Expiratory Flow from raised lung volumes is measured using rapid thoracic compression.  Thoracic Gas Volumes is measured using a whole body plethysmograph.  All measurements are obtained by using Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) developed by the Cystic Fibrosis Therapeutic Development Network (CFTDN).

The Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory satellite facilities are located at Landerbrook, Westlake, Twinsburg and Strongsville locations. These laboratories perform standard Spirometry test using the Jaeger MasterScope systems.
