Some childhood cancer survivors experience problems in school related to their cancer and treatment. These cognitive late effects often manifest several years after the treatment has ended and can lead to learning problems at school.
The most common school problems include difficulties with:
- attention,
- processing speed,
- reading comprehension,
- memory and
- executive functioning (planning, judgment, problem-solving)
The School Liaison Program provides evaluation and one-on-one advocacy for patients who are experiencing problems in school related to their cancer treatment.
Services include consultation with patients, parents, and school personnel, participation in school Individualized Education Program (IEP) planning process, and educational workshops for school personnel.
