Scoliosis
The Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital now offers a predictive test that is providing increased peace of mind for children diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) and their families.
This new, molecular-based test, called the ScoliScore AIS Prognostic Test, is leading the way to individualized scoliosis treatment by providing patient-specific information that is used to help health care providers optimize treatment plans.
What is ScoliScore?
ScoliScore is a quick, painless multi-gene test that provides a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the likelihood of spinal curve progression for patients who have been diagnosed with AIS.
How does the ScoliScore test work?
The ScoliScore AIS Prognostic Test analyzes DNA extracted from a saliva sample and compares genetic markers that have been linked in clinical trials to the risk of spinal curve progression. The more genetic markers that there are, the higher the score will be. The results of the analysis are then put into a mathematical equation to convert those measures into the ScoliScore Curve Progression Score. The score is set in a range from 1-200. This range has been further broken into categories – Low, Medium and High – that refer to the likely risk of curve progression.
Is my child eligible to take the ScoliScore test?
The ScoliScore AIS Prognostic Test is intended for patients who:
- Have a primary diagnosis of AIS
- are between the ages of 9 and 13 years old;
- Have a mild scoliotic curve (defined as <25°)
- Are of Caucasian ethnicity (North American, South American, European, Eastern European, Middle Eastern).
