The University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Program facilitates the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells as a treatment option for children and young adults with a variety of acquired and congenital disorders, including:
- Hematopoietic Malignancies
- Solid Tumors
- Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes
- Inherited Immune Deficiency Syndromes
- Metabolic Diseases.
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s BMT program, led by Dr. Kenneth R. Cooke, is raising the standard of care. Patients are managed by an integrated team of specialized physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers and nurses. UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital’s BMT team combines years of patient care experience and expertise in supportive care, transplant-related complications and survivorship, with direct links to national cooperative groups.
We have identified and work closely with sub-specialists in each of the subspecialties which assist in the care of the transplant patient. The Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Program developed a monitored outpatient program and is currently developing several other exceptional clinical pathways.

Transplants are performed from related and unrelated donors. The transplant program utilizes the numerous cord blood banks nationally and internationally available. Various stem cell sources are utilized: peripheral blood stem cells, bone marrow and umbilical cord blood. Both allogeneic myeloablative and non-myeloablative regimens are performed at our center. High dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell rescue is available as a tandem and non-tandem option for many of the solid tumors.
The pediatric BMT program functions jointly with the University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center's nationally recognized adult BMT program.
Patients receive their inpatient care in a 26 bed hepa-filtered unit designated for immuno-compromised patients on the second floor of UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
Ambulatory and outpatient care is obtained in the UH Seidman Cancer Center. Patients may receive chemotherapy infusions, blood component transfusions, stem cell infusions and extensive evaluations without necessitating admission to the hospital.
