What types of children should be seen in this clinic?
Children with physical disabilities who would benefit from assessments by a physician as well as therapists. For example: to update their current therapy to investigate a variety of treatment options discuss equipment needs improve independence and mobility.
What if my child does not have spasticity or cerebral palsy?
We enjoy seeing children with a wide variety of disabilities. Children with hypotonia (low tone) and dystonia (chorea and athetosis) are also welcome. Children do not need to have a specific diagnosis to be seen. We welcome all children with concerns about their physical development.
What should we expect at a visit?
The first visit usually takes a half-day. Your child will meet the neurologist, and have a comprehensive physical therapy and occupational therapy assessment. This first part sometimes takes 1 to 2 hours.
Your family would then take a break, the team meets to discuss their findings and treatment options. When you return, a team member will discuss their findings and recommend treatment options.
Follow up visits are scheduled on a special day and usually take about hour. Information from treating therapists and teachers is very helpful at these visits.
Orthotic specialists and social workers are available on site if needed.
What information should we bring?
The most important information the team will want- is input from you and your child regarding your goals. Information from therapists who treat your child and your childs school- including school testing and educational plan- are very welcome.
What types of treatments might be recommended?
Options might include recommendations to supplement your childs current home exercise and stretching program; recommendations for school intervention; recommendations to your therapist- which might include specific treatment goals or special treatments such as electrical stimulation; equipment recommendations; discussion of medication options such as oral medications and botulinum toxin injections; discussion of surgical options such as orthopedic surgery, intrathecal baclofen, or selective dorsal rhizotomy.
Would we have to change therapy services to Rainbow?
Absolutely not! Our team in very pleased to work with therapists from other institutions and within the community. We value input from therapists who know the children well. Our recommendations are intended to add to on going treatment.
Dr. Green is happy to collaborate with your childs current primary doctors and specialists. Please bring their name and addresses to your first visit.
Are other specialists available?
If other evaluations are recommended that you would like to obtain at Rainbow hospital, we can assist your family in arranging visits with other specialists- for example Pediatric Orthopedics, Pediatric Neurosurgery, Orthotics and speech therapy.
If you choose, a copy of the visit summary which will be sent to your primary doctor can also be sent to the specialists of your choice. We have extensive experience in collaborating with other doctors and therapists, and are happy to do so.
