Goals for First Year Fellowship

The fellow should progress toward competency in each of the areas noted. By the end of the year these objectives should be met in order to advance to the second year.

Patient Care

  • Inpatient and Consultation service- Should be able to obtain a GI history, perform a complete physical exam, make assessments, and formulate a plan/recommendations based on a differential diagnosis.
  • Out-patient Service: Should be able to obtain a GI history, perform a complete physical exam, formulate a plan based on a differential diagnosis


Endoscopy/Special procedures

  • Understand the indications and contraindications for an upper/lower endoscopy
  • Understand the indications and contraindications for special procedures such as lactose breath hydrogen tests, ph/impedance, anal manometries, etc
  • Be able to determine when to schedule a case in the sedation unit versus the OR
  • Can obtain informed consent for various procedures
  • Should master upper endoscopies
  • Should be able to perform 50-75% of colonoscopy alone
  • Should become familiar with performing polypectomies and banding
  • Should become familiar with performing  rectal suction biopsies and anal manometries
  • Should become familiar with interpreting lactose breath hydrogen tests, ph probe tests, impedance test


Medical Knowledge

  • Demonstrate participation in conferences such as preparing journal club, presenting in case conferences, etc
  • Read in relation to basic GI problems and in-service patients
  • Demonstrate investigatory and analytic thinking process and apply this to patient care
  • Identify and address knowledge weaknesses based on in-service exam
  • Participate in weekly board review


Practiced Based Learning

  • Demonstrate increase knowledge in patient care and development of plans/recommendation based on reading /learning


Interpersonal & Communication Skills

  • Demonstrate a therapeutic and ethical relationship with patients
  • Communicates effectively with patients, patient’s families, in-service team and other health care personnel
  • Works effectively with other members of the medical team


Professionalism

  • Demonstrates respect, compassion, integrity and honesty
  • Demonstrate commitment of ethical principles of patient care and obtaining consent
  • Shows respect for differences in culture, race, gender, socioeconomic status and religious beliefs
  • Should demonstrate professionalism in dress, punctuality and demeanor


Systems Based Practice

  • Understand how care plans affect other professionals, health care organization and society as a whole
  • Learn how to practice cost-effective health care without compromising patient care
  • Know how to partner with health care managers an health care providers to improve patient care


Research

  • Explore a research area of interest
  • Consider a mentor and members for the Scholarship Oversight Committee
