Each year is divided into thirteen four-week blocks to maximize the clinical experiences and available elective time. Med/peds switch specialties every 3-4 blocks to allow for seasonal variation throughout their residencies.
- Residents have two 2-week blocks of vacation each year plus time off during the December holiday season.
- First year residents also have one-week of vacation at the end of their internship year.
Call/Night coverage:
Medicine: Intern residents on floor teams admit patients in a long, medium, short, no admit sequence. Long call consists of 3 admissions prior to 9pm, leaving by 10:30pm; medium call 2 admissions before 4pm, out by 7pm; and short call 2 night float or ICU transfers prior to 2pm. This “modified trickle” approach has provided a balance between admission responsibilities and ability to catch up on other tasks and teaching. Nights are covered by a team of 1 senior resident and 2 junior residents for admissions and 2 interns cross-covering the medical teams. Overnight call is limited to ICU rotations in the 2nd and 3rd years of training.
Pediatrics: University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital residency program transitioned to an integrated shift system for interns and senior residents on the wards in 2010. With the active input of the residents, both directly and via the Resident Advisory Council leadership, interns have night shifts during their inpatient ward experience, allowing for improved continuity and education. We believe that being proactive about this change allowed us the time for the fine-tuning necessary to have a successful transition when the new rules went into effect July 2011.
