Meal Card
Residents receive on-call money that they use by swiping their identification badges at the cafeteria and the Einstein’s bagel & coffee cart in the hospital atrium. The amount of money is directly correlated to the number of overnight calls each resident has, and can be used even when not on call. In addition, free breakfast is provided at all pediatric morning conferences with free lunch provided at medicine noon conferences.
Case Western Reserve University Affiliation
All residents are provided affiliation with Case Western Reserve University. This includes free access to gym facilities, libraries, and email. This can also get you discounted admission to places like the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Natural History Museum, and Art Museum.
Fitness Centers
As part of the Case affiliation, all residents have free access to Case’s Veale Center gymnasium and athletic facilities. The available facilities include a cardio training room, weight lifting room, swimming pool, racquet ball courts, squash courts, climbing wall, basketball courts, indoor track, and tennis courts. The Veale Center is located across the street from UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. Case also has a private fitness center, 1-2-1 Fitness Center, also located across the street from UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital. In addition to a weight and cardio training room, 1-2-1 offers a variety of group exercise classes at no extra cost, including cycling, pilates, yoga, and cardio kickboxing. Discounted memberships are available to residents.
Health Insurance
The medical plans in the UH Benefits Program are offered through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. There are two plans to choose from, thus allowing each resident to choose the plan that best fits their needs. Health insurance is available to employees who are regularly scheduled to work at least 16 hours per week. Coverage is effective the first day of the month coinciding with or following your employment date.
Dental Insurance
Dental coverage is available through CIGNA Dental for you and your family. Covered services can be obtained in or out of the network. The plan provides coverage for preventive, basic, and major restorative services. Your monthly contribution is payroll deducted on a pre-tax basis. Coverage is effective the first day of the month coinciding with or following your employment date.
Professional Liability Insurance
Professional personnel are covered by the hospital at no cost.
Retirement Funds
403(b) Matched Retirement Savings Plan: All employees are eligible to contribute to the 403(b) Matched Retirement Savings Plan. Employees with one year of service who have worked at least 1,000 hours are eligible to receive a match. University Hospitals will match 50 percent of the first 6 percent of your contributions. Money the hospital contributes (matched contributions) is 100 percent vested after three years of service.
Program Perks!
Financial Support
Education Allowance
Educational funds are available for books, journal subscriptions, conference travel, and some medical equipment (e.g. stethoscopes, otoscopes). Amounts are based on training level, with junior and senior residents having the opportunity to earn additional funds by meeting a minimum level of conference attendance. Med/Peds interns receive a free copy of MedStudy Internal Medicine Board Review books.
Pediatric Boards
Categorical and Medicine-Pediatric Residents will be reimbursed $2000 for the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) exam if they take the exam in the fall immediately following residency. All residents are reimbursed for half of the cost of the boards upon registering, with the opportunity for full reimbursement if the conference attendance requirement is met.

Resident Wellness & Resources
- Wellness Inside & Out
Our Residency Wellness program was implemented in 2009 and was accepted as a Poster Presentation at the 2010 APPD Conference in Chicago. The program targets work-life balance. Our wellness website and bulletin board feature monthly personal health themes and group social activities. In addition, residents have access to University Hospitals’ system-wide employee wellness program.
- UH WELLNESS Matters
UH believes that wellness goes beyond physical health. It includes financial security, satisfaction at work, and balance in your personal life – all the things that affect your sense of well-being. WELLNESS Matters brings together tools and resources that UH provides to support residents and employees in all these ways. This is just one of many reasons UH was named as one of Cleveland’s Top 30 large companies to work. One facet of this program is affordable Backup Child & Elder Care.

In Our Backyards: Where we like to live and visit!
Clevelanders divide the city into "East side" and "West side," with the Cuyahoga River being the dividing landmark. Because UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital is on the east side of town, it's most common for residents to live in the near Eastern suburbs, downtown Cleveland, or in the historic urban Cleveland districts just west of the river. Check out our Cleveland Neighborhoods information, in the Life in Cleveland tab, which our residents created as an introduction to some of the most popular neighborhoods.
