When to Refer

Referrals to the Expertise of a Trauma Center

Bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes and simple broken bones common to childhood can be handled quite well at a local hospital. However, conditions requiring the unique skills of pediatric specialty care, including pediatric surgeons, may require the expertise of a pediatric trauma center. For more complex injuries or conditions that require immediate attention, such as lacerations, difficult fractures, or severe injuries affecting more than one organ system, our Level I Trauma Center accepts referrals. When every moment counts, parents and referring physicians can ensure the health of their child or patient to University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Pediatric Trauma Center.

Smooth and Expedient Referrals to the Pediatric Trauma Center

A community emergency department knows the specifics of conditions requiring referral to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Agreements are in place with northern Ohio hospitals that help make the process of transferring a child to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital smooth and expedient. We provide the most advanced care possible from the time we first see an injured child through treatment and recovery. We will stay with the child and his or her family for as long as care is needed.

Emergency Transportation Available

In some emergencies – imminently life-threatening injuries or other traumatic medical situations – a child may need to get to the hospital immediately. If a parent, EMS technician, or other professional feels the danger to the child is serious and immediate, our mobile intensive care unit or helicopter transport services are available.
