What is a Trauma Center?

Trauma centers are hospitals with a singular commitment to caring for the injured, incorporating programs to optimize care across the continuum, from injury prevention through rehabilitation.

At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, board-certified trauma surgeons with pediatric nurses and a pediatric emergency department team specially trained in the care of injured children are ready to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Inpatient units and ancillary services also have special skills and equipment.

By Ohio law, only those hospitals inspected by the American College of Surgeons and found to meet stringent patient care criteria may call themselves trauma centers.

When Would a Child Need a Trauma Center?

Bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes and simple broken bones common to childhood can be handled quite well at a neighborhood hospital. Conditions requiring the unique skills of pediatric surgical specialties such as complex lacerations, difficult fractures, or severe injuries affecting more than one organ system require the expert talents of a trauma center.

A community emergency department knows the specifics of conditions requiring transfer to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Agreements are in place with northern Ohio hospitals that help make the process of transferring a child to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital smooth and expedient.
