Your Child’s Sleep Study

University Hospitals Pediatric Specialists Use a Child-Centered Approach to Sleep Studies

University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is a full-service children’s hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Our expert pediatric team is continually focused on the unique needs of young patients by providing:

  • Appropriate sized beds and pediatric specific equipment
  • Sleep technologists with special training in working with children and families
  • Child life specialists who help improve a child’s understanding of the sleep study and treatments for a more positive experience

When a child is referred to the Pediatric Sleep Center at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, our talented team performs a complete physical evaluation and medical history and reports the results to both the parents and to the child’s primary care physician. Working together brings the best outcome for children with sleep disorders.

Understanding Pediatric Sleep Studies

The sleep test or polysomnogram (PSG) helps pediatric sleep specialists at UH to understand each child’s sleep patterns to determine the best sleep disorder treatment. The overnight sleep study assesses a child’s breathing patterns, brainwaves and muscle movements during sleep. Using accurately placed sensors on the child’s legs, body and head, the child’s movements and noises will be recorded by videotape.

Younger children, particularly those with medical conditions, usually have the child’s sleep study at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

Older children without behavioral and/or major medical issues may go to a nearby hotel for the sleep study. Studies are conducted at:

Beachwood Marriott Residence Inn
3628 Park East Drive
Beachwood, OH 44122

Child-Friendly Sleep Study Step-by-Step Process

Upon arriving at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital or nearby hotel, the parents and child will get settled into the comfortable bedroom. A sleep study technician will go through a step-by-step process beginning with recording the child’s height, weight and blood pressure. The parents will be asked to complete a questionnaire regarding the child’s health and sleep behaviors.

To perform the child’s sleep study, a technician will apply small sticky patches on the child’s legs, chest, head and face. The sensors look and feel like stickers, which may make it fun for children. The areas on the child’s skin will be cleaned with a lotion, prior to applying the stickers.

Each sensor or sticker has a wire, or string, attached that connects to a small monitoring box placed near the child’s pillow. Throughout the night, the sleep technician will observe the child from a nearby room via a video camera. After the child wakes up in the morning, the sensors will be gently removed using a liquid sticker remover and the child is free to go home.
