Outpatient

Fellows in our program provide care to outpatients in two locations, the main UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital campus and a suburban location approximately 20 minutes east of the main campus. These experiences allow our fellows to care for outpatients from diverse backgrounds. The cystic fibrosis and technology dependent clinics are at the main campus location. All outpatient locations have on site radiology, laboratory services, pulmonary function equipment and staff, computers and access to the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center Electronic Health Record and Radiology Viewing systems. Faculty members see outpatients at several additional suburban locations around Cleveland.

Pulmonary Diagnostic Center

The pulmonary diagnostic center at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is equipped with several spirometers, plethysmographers, equipment for performing induced sputum, nasal brushings and scrapes, exhaled nitric oxide measurements, infant pulmonary function testing, impulse oscillometry, and exhaled breath condensate measurements. The diagnostic center is staffed by five respiratory therapists who are certified to perform pulmonary function testing.

Pediatric Pulmonology Bronchoscopy Suite

Most pediatric flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopies are performed either in the pediatric endoscopy suite or the Pediatric Operating Rooms at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, or at the patient’s bedside in the intensive care units. Occasional procedures are performed at the bedside in the intensive care units. Sedation and anesthesia are managed by pediatric anesthesiologists or critical care specialists. Bronchoscopes that are suitable for all children ranging from premature infants to adolescents are available. A bronchoscope and portable cleaning system is also available for tracheostomy evaluations in the technology-dependent clinic. A life-sized model is available to fellows to practice bronchoscopic skills and learn bronchoscopic anatomy.
