At University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s our critical care team takes care of children who are dealing with a wide range of illnesses and injuries, from young cancer patients with rare tumors to babies recovering from heart surgery.
We are committed to family-centered care, making parents an important part of the team caring for children. In each of our hospital rooms, a twin bed is available for parents to remain with their child, 24 hours a day, even sleeping at his or her bedside. Our critical care specialists will be close at hand for both children and their parents at all times.
Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
The University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is a 21-bed combined medical-surgical unit which cares for more than 1,500 critically ill children each year. Our staff is specially trained to provide expert critical care for children with serious illnesses and injuries, 24 hours a day.
Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit
Located within the PICU, the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU) delivers high-quality, state-of-the-art, family-centered critical care for infants, children and adults with congenital and pediatric acquired heart disease. The unit’s world-class interdisciplinary care encompasses skilled assessment, continuous observation and timely intervention.
Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)
UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is among an elite number of international centers to receive the Excellence in Life Support Award by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) uses a machine to pump and oxygenate a patient’s blood outside the body. This therapy can provide life-saving oxygen to promote long-term quality of life.
Level I Pediatric Trauma Center
Our critical care team works closely with the pediatric trauma experts at UH Rainbow’s Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, which offers the highest level of pediatric trauma care in Cleveland. We provide state-of-the-art intensive care for the most critically injured babies and children in our intensive care unit.
Conditions We Treat
When a child is transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s team of caring pediatric specialists is available to provide expert critical care. This includes care and treatment for traumatic injuries, critical illnesses, and for children recovering from surgery. We also treat children referred from the emergency department and other pediatric divisions.
Some of the conditions we treat include:
- Complications of cancer or blood disorders
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Life-threatening traumatic injuries
- Liver or kidney failure
- Poisonings
- Rare, cancerous tumors
- Sedation for inpatient medical procedures
- Serious or rare forms of any childhood disease
- Severe asthma attack
- Viral or bacterial infections, including severe cases of meningitis or pneumonia
