Traditional and New Approaches to Treat Severe Spinal Deformities

Traditional surgical techniques for pediatric patients with severe spinal deformities can be used in older children and adolescents with great success. However, very young children are different because they are still growing and complete fusion surgery can limit development. Our orthopedic surgeons have helped develop surgical and non-surgical techniques that allow for the continued growth of children with spinal deformities.

To reduce pain and potential complications, orthopedic surgeons at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital employ advanced surgical techniques that include:

  • Amicar® (a drug that reduces blood loss during spine surgery)
  • Duramorph spinal anesthesia
  • Growing rods, including the use of newly improved devices to decrease the need for repeat surgeries
  • HemiBridge™ System: A small device, inserted minimally invasively, which guides the spine to correct curvature without the use of a brace
  • Neuromuscular monitoring
  • Posterior-only spinal fusion with spinal osteotomy to hasten healing
  • Risser casting and thoracolumbar (trunk) bracing
  • Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)

Quick, Simple Test Helps Deliver an Accurate Diagnosis

UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Division of Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery in Ohio participated in the development of ScoliScore, a simple, painless saliva sample test that can help determine, through DNA analysis, whether a child’s spinal curve will progress. UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital offers this highly accurate test to children between the ages of 9 and 13 who have recently been diagnosed with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and have a mild curvature of the spine.
