Optimizing a Child’s Ability to Function

The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital provides comprehensive surgical services to help care for young patients—starting with the diagnosis and continuing throughout treatment and recovery. Our pediatric neurosurgery team works in tandem with other specialists as needed to provide holistic treatment for each child.

Patients can receive these services at any of the following centers, which are specially equipped to address various neurological needs:

  • Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Center: This center provides innovative treatments for brain and spinal cord tumors and related problems in adults and children. The center’s minimally invasive approach employs blood conservation techniques, spares sensitive tissue and significantly decreases recovery periods.
  • Jennifer Ferchill Brain Tumor Center: This center offers a collaborative approach to brain tumor treatment that brings together expertise in diagnostics, neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, neurology and neuropsychology. It is the only regional brain tumor center to offer the expertise of a National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) cancer center affiliated with a nationally-ranked children’s hospital.
  • Level IV Pediatric Epilepsy Center: This center provides comprehensive services, including medical and surgical solutions for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric seizure disorders and associated syndromes.
  • Spasticity Program: This is a multidisciplinary program for the treatment of spasticity and other tone or physical problems. It offers integrated medical, therapeutic and surgical treatments for patients based on a personalized care plan.
  • Level I Pediatric Trauma Center: The Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery is part of UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, the only center of its kind in Northeast Ohio. This center specializes in the treatment of injured children suffering from head trauma. Team members treat acute brain and spinal cord trauma as well as chronic neurological conditions resulting from major trauma.
