University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and Cleveland Police Department Launch New Car Seat Distribution Program and Fitting Station

Thursday, December 04, 2014

Clevelanders on the near west side have a new option for ensuring their children are traveling as safely as possible in the car. UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and the Cleveland Police Department have established a car seat fitting station at the Second District Police Station. On the first Friday of every month people can visit the fitting station to have a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician install car seats and booster seats in their vehicles. A car seat distribution program, funded by State Farm, enables parents who are on government assistance to purchase a car seat for $30 or a booster seat for $10.

“Every 34 seconds, a child under 13 is involved in an automobile crash. That’s why it is so important to make sure children are riding properly restrained for their age, weight, and height,” explains Kathryn Wesolowski, Manager of the UH Rainbow Injury Prevention Center. “For years we’ve seen a tremendous need for education and assistance on Cleveland’s west side. We are excited to partner with Cleveland police to offer this program and make car seats accessible to those in need and ensure everyone is using them properly.”

The fitting station is staffed the first Friday of every month from 4:00 – 6:00 pm by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians from Cleveland Police and the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Center. Bilingual technicians are available to assist Spanish-speaking parents. No appointments are necessary.
