Kohl’s Department Stores to donate more than $96,000 to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Child Passenger Safety Program

Cleveland, OH, January 5, 2015 — Kohl’s Department Stores is kicking off the new year with a donation of $96,858 in support of the Kohl’s Safe Rides for All Kids program at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Safe Rides for All Kids focuses on getting every member of the family riding safely, from infants and toddlers in car seats to youngsters in booster seats and older children, teens, and adults in seat belts.

Research indicates that child restraint systems are often used incorrectly. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 72% of car and booster seats are misused in ways that could be expected to increase a child’s risk of injury during a crash, including using the wrong restraint for a child’s age, height, and weight or making mistakes in how a seat is installed in a vehicle or how a child is secured in a seat. “In most cases, parents who use the wrong restraint methods for their children aren’t making conscious errors—they either don’t realize they’re making dangerous choices or don’t understand why different restraint methods make a difference,” explains Kathryn Wesolowski, Injury Prevention Manager at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Many parents, for example, do not understand the difference between forward or rear facing car seats, or do not know why boosters are better for smaller bodies than seat belts alone. “Finding ways to ensure parents can get answers to their questions and have easy, accessible ways to find information are keys to getting more children restrained in the safest possible ways and preventing more crash-related injuries,” explains Ms. Wesolowski. The Kohl’s Safe Rides for All Kids program is designed to do just that—by providing parents with information and resources they need to ensure children are travelling in the safest way possible, reducing risk of injury or death in motor vehicle crashes.

Since 2006, Kohl’s has donated more than $1.4 million to Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital to support the Kohl’s Safe Rides for All Kids program at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

Kohl's commitment to UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is made possible through the Kohl's Cares® cause merchandise program.
