Sickle Cell Anemia Center Provides Compassionate Clinical Care for Pediatric Patients

The Sickle Cell Anemia Center at the Angie Fowler Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Institute at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in conjunction with UH Seidman Cancer Center, in Cleveland, Ohio is a trusted provider of health care for children with sickle cell disease. Established in 1989, the Sickle Cell Anemia Center provides compassionate, specialty care to more than 250 northeast Ohio children in cooperation with area pediatricians and family physicians.

Largest Hemoglobinopathy Program in Northeast Ohio

The Sickle Cell Anemia Center at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is the largest hemoglobinopathy program in northeast Ohio. Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder characterized by abnormal hemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues of the body). In addition to clinical care, the Sickle Cell Anemia Center is involved in many professional and educational programs and participates in several innovative national and regional clinical research projects.

We are deeply committed to providing family-centered care to all patients with sickle cell disease. Our services include:

  • Genetic counseling and prenatal diagnostic testing
  • Newborn diagnosis
  • Comprehensive outpatient evaluation and ongoing care, including referrals to subspecialists when needed
  • Supervision of inpatient and emergency care
  • Comprehensive patient and family education
  • Psychological counseling and guidance
  • Pain management education, with special emphasis on relaxation techniques
  • Day hospital services
  • Assistance with social support services
  • Bone marrow transplantation
  • Screening for stroke risk (Transcranial doppler, or TCD, studies)
  • Hydroxyurea management
