A Lifetime of Caring

Many children who have undergone cancer treatment may have multiple challenges for years, even decades, following treatment. At University Hospitals, we offer each child superb cancer care that extends into young adulthood and beyond. We will be there as a child grows in order to assist with any concerns that may come up as a result of his or her cancer or cancer treatment. At the Children’s Cancer Center, our leading-edge physicians become partners in care for life with the children and their families.

Advanced Proton Therapy Can Effectively Treat Cancer in Children

Proton therapy is an innovative treatment option used to treat cancer in both children and adults, and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is pleased to be one of the first children’s hospitals in the country to have a full-service Proton Therapy Center onsite. Proton therapy is a type of radiation therapy that uses proton beams to precisely target tumors, sparing healthy tissue. This is especially beneficial in pediatric cancer patients, whose still developing bodies are more prone to radiation side effects. Proton therapy is a painless, outpatient procedure that allows families and kids to maintain their normal day-to-day lives during treatment. This therapy is an ideal treatment option for many types of childhood cancers.

Clinical Trials Lead to New Treatments

For almost every type of pediatric cancer, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has an aggressive research component dedicated to improving outcomes and enhancing the quality of life for children. We are among only a few hospitals in the world to constantly develop the most advanced cancer treatments through ongoing clinical trials. For young cancer patients, this access to new therapies allows them to be among the first to benefit from potentially life-saving, novel cancer therapies and procedures. In fact, nearly 85 percent of our patients under age 15 are enrolled in clinical trials for the newest cancer treatments.

As leading members of CureSearch, the world’s largest childhood cancer research organization, our physicians serve as senior advisors on National Institutes of Health-funded clinical trials and as members of national committees on solid tumors, leukemia and bone marrow transplantation.
