Multidisciplinary Team Approach

At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Angie Fowler Adolescent & Young Adult Cancer Institute, a unified team of board-certified pediatric physicians and specialists manages the child’s bone marrow or stem cell transplant and works side-by-side with the family to create an individualized treatment plan for each child. Our multidisciplinary team includes:

Patients receive inpatient care in a 30-bed high efficiency particulate air (HEPA)-filtered unit designed for the needs of those with weakened immune systems.

Both Related and Unrelated Donors

Blood and bone marrow transplants at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital are performed with both related and unrelated donors. The transplant program utilizes numerous cord blood banks that are available nationally and internationally. Various stem cell sources are used, including:

  • Peripheral blood stem cells
  • Bone marrow
  • Umbilical cord blood
  • Mesenchymal stem cells

Outpatient Convenience

For the convenience of our young patients, we also offer a monitored outpatient program. Ambulatory care, including infusion and transfusion therapy, is provided at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital without requiring young patients to be admitted to the hospital.
