Leading the Way in Endocrinology Care for Children

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital coordinates evaluation, treatment and management of a wide variety of children’s endocrine problems. Our specialists treat children of all ages.

Testing, treatment and management services are delivered through several areas of concentration:

The Division of Pediatric Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism also places emphasis on wellness, prevention and education.

  • Healthy Kids, Healthy Weight is a comprehensive, educational and counseling program. The team works to help children and their families develop and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
  • Center for Childhood Diabetes Activity and Nutrition conducts many programs and community outreach to promote wellness.
  • Education is a key component of all activities. For example, young children with diabetes and their families get intensive training in nutrition, available treatments, blood glucose control, and the latest advances.
  • The division works with regional primary care pediatricians to encourage advanced monitoring to catch weight and obesity problems earlier in life.

In addition to providing highly advanced care, members of the endocrinology team are heavily involved in research. Their research addresses a wide range of important topics, including:

  • How to best treat children with type 2 diabetes
  • New advances in managing cystic fibrosis-related diabetes
  • The cellular mechanisms responsible for diabetes complications
  • The impact of glucose control on diabetes and its complications
  • Decision-making and treatment for growth disorders
  • How to best prevent chronic illnesses in primary care offices
  • How schools can best promote wellness for young children
  • Multilevel clinical and community interventions to prevent and treat overweight children
  • Policies that best promote children’s health and well-being

These extensive research programs are supported by major federal and state grants, as well as philanthropy.

Balance is the Key

With broad experience in hospitals, outpatient offices, laboratories, clinical studies, education and policy, our experts are at the leading-edge of research, knowledge and techniques. We have access to the newest, most advanced methods, but we know when to employ new treatments and when to trust the tried-and-true. This extensive experience and balanced approach is one of the reasons doctors and families from far and near consult our physicians for second opinions.

Making the World a Better Place for Kids

In addition to the clinical role our specialists fulfill, they also participate as childhood health experts in the public sector.

Policy is an important part of the division’s mission. We believe we have a fundamental responsibility to children everywhere and to future generations. Providing policymakers and stakeholders with good science and sound advice is one of the many ways we fulfill that commitment to the community.

From the city of Cleveland to the state capital at Columbus, Ohio – and all the way to Capitol Hill in Washington – our experts provide analyses and consultations that assist lawmakers and stakeholders to craft policy that supports healthier children. One of our physicians served on the Senate Finance Committee for over a year, advising on issues related to child health. Our physicians serve on major national and state policy boards, and hold key advisory roles for stakeholders and advocacy groups.

Team members are also involved at the local and state level. We are helping to develop healthier school lunches. And we have testified in statehouses and on Capitol Hill about strategies to combat diabetes and childhood obesity.
