What is a Trauma Center?
Trauma centers are hospitals with a singular commitment to caring for the injured; incorporating programs to optimize care across the continuum, from injury prevention through rehabilitation.
At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, board certified trauma surgeons with pediatric nurses and a pediatric emergency department team specially trained in the care of injured children are ready to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Inpatient units and ancillary services also have special skills and equipment.
By Ohio law, only those hospitals inspected by the American College of Surgeons and found to meet stringent patient care criteria may call themselves trauma centers.
When would my child need a trauma center?
Bumps, bruises, cuts, scrapes and simple broken bones common to childhood can be handled quite well in a neighborhood hospital. Conditions requiring the unique skills of pediatric surgical specialties such as complex lacerations, difficult fractures, hospitalization and severe injuries affecting more than one organ system require the expert talents of a trauma center.
