Fetal Cardiac Intervention

Providing Prenatal Diagnosis and Intervention for Babies with Congenital Heart Defects

The fetal heart program at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, part of the Congenital Heart Collaborative with Nationwide Children’s Hospital, is Ohio’s first single-site fetal cardiac intervention program, specializing in detection and treatment of fetal cardiac defects in infants still in the womb.

One of only a handful of such programs in the country, the fetal heart program brings together experts in maternal fetal medicine, pediatric and interventional cardiology, pediatric cardiac and obstetrical anesthesia, pediatric cardiac surgery, neonatology and other specialties to ensure seamless care for mothers and their babies with fetal heart defects, both before, during and after birth.

In-Utero Diagnosis and Treatment of Serious Heart Defects

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a rare but serious congenital heart defect that requires a series of surgeries after a baby is born and the potential for lifelong complications. Our experts are trained in fetal cardiac intervention and can often prevent or lessen the severity of this and other defects in-utero, using advanced fetal cardiac procedures. This may lead to fewer complications at birth and potentially better outcomes for babies in both the short- and long-term. Congenital heart defects we diagnose and offer fetal intervention for include:

  • Critical aortic stenosis
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) with restrictive atrial septum
  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) with intact atrial septum
  • Pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum

A Highly Collaborative Fetal Heart Team

This integrated fetal cardiac intervention program includes the maternal fetal medicine (MFM) experts at University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital, which is housed under the same roof as UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, and its nationally recognized neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) – ranked No. 4 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. This allows a smooth transition between delivery and newborn care, all while the mother recovers within the same hospital.

Our team includes experts in:

  • Maternal fetal medicine
  • Neonatology
  • Fetal echocardiography
  • Pediatric interventional cardiology
  • Pediatric cardiothoracic surgery
  • Pediatric cardiac anesthesia
  • Obstetrical anesthesia
  • Social work

Advanced Fetal Procedures

Fetal heart procedures our specially trained team performs include:

  • Fetal aortic balloon valvuloplasty
  • Fetal atrial septostomy
  • Fetal atrial septal stent
  • Fetal pulmonary balloon valvuloplasty
