Didactic Teaching

The fellow will have the opportunity for a range of didactic and educational opportunities at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, other University Hospitals, and at Case Western Reserve University. Mandatory didactic experiences include a weekly Division of Developmental Pediatrics Seminar, weekly neuropsychology seminar, and bi-monthly neuropsychology case conference. The fellow will also participate in a monthly inter-institutional fellowship journal club with other area hospitals. Fellows will be required to give some educational presentations at these meetings. The fellow will also have the opportunity to teach medical residents who rotate through the division and may have the opportunity to supervise graduate students who are learning psychological testing procedures. The fellow may also have opportunities to present to schools and community organizations. Additional didactic opportunities include Pediatric Psychology Seminar, Pediatric Grand Rounds, Adult Neuropsychology Seminar, Epilepsy Case Conference, Epilepsy Surgery Grand Rounds, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Grand Rounds, and Neurological Institute Grand Rounds. The fellow will devote approximately 10-15% of his/her time to didactics.

In addition, the fellow will be expected to complete readings in clinical neuropsychology and related areas. Readings will be chosen for each fellow by his/her supervisors and additional activities will be assigned to meet the criteria set forth by the Houston Conference. Didactics and readings will include specific focus on ethical standards, culture/diversity, and individual differences. The fellow’s competence in clinical practice as well as these areas will be assessed with ratings by the faculty supervisors. The fellow will also complete a written test of neuropsychological knowledge at the end of the first year of training. Case conceptualization and knowledge of ethical standards will also be assessed and rated via oral discussion of practice samples throughout the fellowship.
