UH Pediatric Anesthesiologists Provide Vital Support During Emergency Care and Surgery

Our anesthesia specialists work closely to support UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, the only facility of its kind in Northeast Ohio.

The anesthesia specialists are part of the pediatric surgical team, which is mobilized at a moment’s notice when an accident occurs. At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, board-certified anesthesiologists support the pediatric trauma surgeons, nurses and emergency department team. They are specially trained in the care of injured children and are prepared to respond 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The team also plays a key role in minimally invasive surgery, which has been proven to reduce discomfort and accelerate healing. In addition to administering anesthesia, anesthesiologists deliver medications to manage pain and prevent nausea and vomiting.

By carefully monitoring the child’s vital functions, including heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure and breathing, these qualified specialists can quickly diagnose and treat medical issues that may develop. Our anesthesiologists work hard to ensure that the young patient is safe and comfortable before, during and after the procedure.

Minimally invasive surgery is offered in all 12 pediatric surgical specialties, including anesthesia. At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, our advanced anesthesia procedures include:

  • Minimally invasive techniques for sedation and anesthesia induction
  • Spinal and epidural blocks to decrease postoperative pain
  • The placement of central venous and arterial access lines using ultrasound technology
  • Nerve blocks performed with the help of an ultrasound to decrease postoperative pain

Anesthesia Helps Manage Pain and Anxiety in Children During Multiple Procedures

Typically, individuals may only think of anesthesia as useful for reducing sensation and awareness during surgery. However, the benefits of pediatric anesthesia extend far beyond surgery.

With children, the services of the anesthesiology team are invaluable for other tests and procedures. Anesthesia can reduce the child’s stress and anxiety levels, while helping to facilitate the performance of a medical test. This is especially useful when the young patient needs to remain still for an extended period of time while images are being recorded.

In addition to surgery, pediatric anesthesia services at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital are helpful during the following procedures:
