Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology

University Hospitals Anesthesiologists Offer Personalized Care to Enhance Comfort

From the time children and parents enter our hospital to the moment they leave, the goal of the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is to maximize comfort, reduce stress and promote accelerated healing.

When it comes to controlling pain and discomfort, children have unique needs that require highly personalized care. Using a team-oriented approach, our board-certified anesthesiology doctors develop individualized care plans for each of our young patients.

We also work to put the child’s family at ease. Pediatric anesthesiologists and clinical researchers at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital have been at the forefront of parental involvement in children’s care for decades. This includes, when possible, having parents present when children receive anesthesia.

Working with other experts at one of the nation’s most respected pediatric hospitals, the Division of Pediatric Anesthesiology team provides complete, around-the-clock anesthesiology care for young patients. Our team may include:

Our doctors hold board certifications in both anesthesiology and pediatrics. All physicians and members of our surgical teams are highly experienced in managing pain in children.

Some of our anesthesiologists work with the cardiac surgery team. While remaining at the leading edge of clinical expertise, these physicians have devoted their practice at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital to providing specialized, coordinated anesthesia care for patients undergoing heart surgery.

Each child who undergoes surgery or another procedure at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital will receive care from an anesthesiologist specializing in pediatrics. Our anesthesiologists successfully handle thousands of procedures each year. Before treatment, the team identifies the best approach to ensure safe, effective anesthesia care and control of postoperative pain and nausea/vomiting.

These teams routinely receive high ratings for quality on follow-up surveys completed by patients and families.

Convenient Pediatric Anesthesiology Services

Working Together to Achieve a Comfortable Patient Experience

Our physicians know that much more is involved in making patients feel comfortable than just safely administering anesthesia. They are also trained in techniques for distraction and relaxation to help keep children as calm and stress-free as possible—whether they are having surgery or undergoing a minor procedure.

For example, the expanded Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) provides areas for both children and parents. It enables pediatric patients to spend less time waiting for surgery in a hospital bed and more time watching movies, listening to music, reading or playing video games. The new design also improves workflow and minimizes challenges for families awaiting a procedure.

Our experts help young patients and their families reduce stress in many ways, including:

  • Arranging preoperative visits to the operating room through our child life specialists
  • Providing the Child’s Guide to Surgery, which is an educational coloring book that helps prepare the child for the procedure
  • Minimizing the number of hospital visits
  • Taking adequate time to get to know children and their families
  • Utilizing a kind and gentle approach
  • Dressing less formally
  • Employing distraction techniques like telling jokes, juggling or doing magic tricks
  • Avoiding needles and intravenous (IV) lines when possible; this can be accomplished by using medications that can be swallowed, nose drops or gaseous medicines breathed in through a mask
  • Having parents present when anesthesia is introduced and when the child is waking up from it (when possible)
