UH launches study of mobile app for post-baby weight loss

Pregnancy is an amazing time in a woman’s life. But getting back into pre-baby shape is not always easy. To help, researchers at University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital are launching a first-of-its-kind clinical trial. The study will investigate the effectiveness of using a smartphone application (app) to shed pounds after pregnancy with the goal of returning to pre-pregnancy weight or body mass index.

The study involves the Lose It! app, which allows users to log all diet and exercise activity and features a sophisticated weight tracker, a dining out calorie counter and calculates calories burned by exercise.

Study participants will be randomly placed into three groups. All of the women, including those in the control group, will receive regular postpartum care from their obstetrician/gynecologists. Group Two will receive one counseling session with a registered dietitian. Group Three also will meet with a dietitian and have a session with study personnel on how to properly use the app. Patient weight will be tracked monthly for three months. Researchers will compare postpartum weight loss among the three groups.

The study is currently accepting new participants. To be eligible, you must have a pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) greater than 30. If you are interested in participating in the study, call 440-995-3810. The FREE Lose It! app is available on Android, iOS, Nook, Kindle and the Web.
