Through the years... Advances in pediatric surgery

1958: Pediatric Surgery becomes a separate division at the hospital under the direction of Robert Izant Jr., MD, the first formally trained pediatric surgeon in northern Ohio. Before this, no one concentrated exclusively on children’s surgery – it was customary for general surgeons to operate on both children and adults.

1996: Pediatric neurosurgeons help develop miniaturized tools for performing endoscopic brain surgery, reducing the need for open-skull surgery.

2009: The hospital launches the Virtual Pediatric Surgery Education Series – a virtual symposium that brings surgical innovation and technology to physicians around the globe.
