Love your legs: New treatment can make varicose veins vanish

Varicose veins can be unsightly and painful. They may also cause medical problems, such as skin rashes, swelling and, in some cases, nonhealing ulcers.

“Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart,” says Margaret Mann, MD, Director of the Vein Clinic at University Hospitals Westlake Health Center. “Venous reflux disease develops when these valves become damaged or diseased.” As a result, vein valves will not close properly, leading to symptoms such as:

  • Throbbing, cramping or swelling in your legs
  • Itching on your lower legs or ankles
  • Varicose veins (large, twisted, blue or purple veins that bulge above the skin)
  • Discoloration of the skin around a swollen vein

Many factors contribute to the risk for varicose veins, including family history, age, gender, pregnancy and being overweight.

People may put off treatment for their varicose veins, thinking that they will have to face painful surgery, hospitalization or long recovery times. Endovenous laser treatment (ELT) is a minimally invasive treatment option that uses laser energy to gently treat varicose veins. “It is the most comfortable laser procedure available and an alternative to invasive vein-stripping surgery,” says Dr. Mann. “The treatment is done in the office and patients can get back to their normal routine in just a few days.”

ELT offers the following benefits for patients:

  • Rapid relief of symptoms
  • A quick and virtually painless procedure
  • Minimal bruising or scarring
  • An in-office procedure with no general anesthesia
