Observational Learning Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in observational learning experiences at UH Portage Medical Center. We offer two types of observational experiences – a monthly half-day program specifically for high school students, and also scheduled experiences throughout the year for college students/adult learners.

Qualifications:

  • 15 years of age to observe in a non-patient care area
  • 16 years of age to observe in a patient care area
  • 18 years of age to observe in Surgery, Emergency Department or Birth Center (or at least high school senior educational level at discretion of department)

Please note: These instructions are for observation experiences at UH Portage Medical Center in Ravenna, Ohio only. Students wanting to observe at another University Hospitals location can obtain information at www.uhhospitals.org.

High School: Opportunities for high school students are available once a month from October – May and July. The half-day program experience includes approximately 3 hours of actual observation with a health care professional. High school students should download and print out the High School Observational Learning Request Form below and follow the packet instructions to register for an experience. Forms must be received at least one week prior to the requested date.

College Student/Adult Learner: College Student/Adult observational learning requests are available year-round. Availability and scheduling is at the discretion of the department or health professional College students and adults should download and print out the Adult Observational Learning Request Form below and follow the packet instructions for requesting an experience. Request forms must be received at least two weeks in advance.

Important: If you are requesting to observe during flu season (typically October – April), you must have proof of receiving a flu vaccination for the current season. You will NOT be allowed to observe if you do not bring proper documentation (receipt from drug store or physician documentation).
