Detecting and Treating Prostate Cancer

Dr. Carson Wong on Prostate Cancer Awareness

Dr. Carson Wong explains the importance of regular screenings, who should be screened and what treatment options are available.

At University Hospitals Parma Medical Center, we understand that early detection and treatment of cancers is the key to success. Although the risk for prostate cancer in men will vary, understanding the disease is important for every man.

As men grow older, the size of their prostate can increase. As the prostate enlarges, men may develop symptoms with regards to urination such as:

  • A weak urine stream
  • Change in the frequency of urination
  • The inability to control the urge to urinate

Although many men may experience these symptoms, it is important to differentiate whether the patient has just an enlargement of the prostate or prostate cancer.

Because the symptoms for prostate cancer can appear in many men, widespread prostate cancer screening is essential to the early treatment and diagnosis of the disease. The American Urological Association recommends that each man over the age of 50 be screened annually with a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE) and Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test.

Men who are at a higher risk should begin screenings at age 40. These include those having family members who have suffered from prostate cancer and African American men.
