What is venous insufficiency?

Venous insufficiency is a condition in which the veins have difficulty sending blood from the legs back to the heart. It is typically caused by damaged valves or deep vein thrombosis, or DVT (a vein blockage caused by a clot). Chronic venous insufficiency is a long-term condition resulting from a partial vein blockage or leaky valves. Blood pools in the veins of the lower leg and causes inflammation.

Symptoms

Venous insufficiency usually becomes apparent when the following symptoms occur:

  • Leg and ankle swelling
  • A dull aching, heaviness or cramping of the legs
  • Leg pain that worsens upon standing and improves upon leg elevation
  • Additional signs that may indicate venous insufficiency:
  • Discoloration of skin at the ankles
  • Redness in legs and ankles
  • Thickening of the skin of the legs and ankles
  • Ulcers on the legs and ankles
