Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. SCD is estimated to affect 90,000 to 100,000 people in the United States. Although not a type of cancer, sickle cell disease is often treated by our doctors because it is a blood disorder. Sickle cell is a lifelong disease that can cause many problems such as painful crises, stroke and infections.
