3 Major Benefits of On-Site Clinics

It is pretty common to schedule doctor appointments during the week to avoid going after work or over the weekend, but leaving the office for them can take hours out of your day. Those missed hours translate into less productivity, and many employers struggle to find the right balance between encouraging healthy behaviors and curbing absenteeism. And as health care costs continue to rise, companies need to find innovative ways to provide affordable, quality care to employees. One attractive option that many large employers are turning to is on-site clinics.

According to Towers Watson’s 2016 Emerging Trends in Health Care survey, 22 percent of employers have one or more on-site health clinics today. By 2018, that figure could grow to 40 percent. Depending on how they are designed, some on-site clinics deliver services similar to what you would expect from a visit to your primary care physician, whereas others may be more specific, treating only work-related injuries. The purpose of the clinic depends on your objectives as well as factors such as company size, industry, job requirements and budget.

Big benefits

There are many reasons for large organizations to consider launching an on-site clinic. Some of the biggest benefits include:

  1. Increased productivity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that productivity losses linked to absenteeism cost U.S. employers $225.8 billion annually. “By bringing health care services directly into the workplace, you can reduce lost work hours resulting from doctor appointments and travel,” says Michael Adornetto, DO, System Medical Director, West Region, UH Primary Care Institute. “Employees can fit treatment for an illness or injury into their schedule, saving a lot of time.”
    Hyland, a software company based in Westlake, Ohio, launched its own on-site clinic in 2014 with the goal of providing a convenient and cost-effective solution as the organization moved to a high-deductible health plan. “The on-site clinic ensures that employees can obtain preventive care without taking additional time off,” says Jackie McNamara, Wellness Program Manager at Hyland. “Additionally, over 300 parents with children in our on-site Child Enrichment Center have access to the clinic, allowing for a quick return to work when kids get sick. Our on-site prescription delivery program makes obtaining refills easier, too.”
  2. Reduced costs. Cost containment is a top priority for many employers. “On-site clinics make it easy for employees to seek immediate care rather than pushing it off until they have a major issue that requires expensive ER visits, specialty services or hospitalizations,” says Dr. Adornetto. “You can better controls costs by funneling everyone toward primary care services. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
    Additionally, having an on-site clinic positions you to conduct ongoing wellness campaigns and screenings that help you address costly chronic conditions, such as obesity and heart disease.
    “The convenience of having quality medical care right here encourages employees to get their annual physical, biometric screening and well visits, all extremely important for maintaining year-round health,” says McNamara.
  3. Enhanced engagement. On-site clinics can also help you attract, engage and retain quality employees. “It shows that you care about your employees’ well-being, which increases satisfaction and reduces turnover,” says Dr. Adornetto.

    Hyland has seen so much success with their on-site clinic that they have expanded services, now offering a health coach, dietitian, chiropractor and physical therapist, in addition to their full-time nurse practitioner. “The employee engagement team’s top goal is to ensure that our employees are happy, healthy and engaged,” says McNamara. “Our on-site clinic is a perk that helps us achieve all three.”
