Women's Cancer :: Gynecologic Oncology

Standing beside every cancer patient at MacDonald Women’s Hospital is a team of physicians, nurses and experienced staff offering continuous care and support. They review treatment options, create a carepath and tend to the physical and emotional needs specific to women with cancer.

The gynecologic oncology experts at MacDonald Women’s Hospital work closely with the professionals at Ireland Cancer Center, recognized as one of the best hospitals in the country for cancer care. Together they conduct advanced research and provide the most sophisticated methods of diagnosis and treatment, along with support services that empower women in their fight against cancer. If your personal physician has already recommended a particular course of action, our physicians can provide a second opinion regarding diagnosis or treatment.

Inpatient Treatment

The fourth floor of MacDonald Women’s Hospital is devoted to the Gynecologic Oncology Unit and the care of women with gynecologic or breast malignancies. The specialized healthcare team consists of physicians, registered nurses who oversee and coordinate the primary nursing care for each patient, a clinical nurse specialist, a social worker and an occupational therapist. This collaborative approach provides continuous care to provide the best possible care for our patients.

Also on this floor is the Women’s Resource Center, which contains books, brochures and videotapes relating to women’s health.

When patients leave the Gynecologic Oncology Unit, they have access to nursing and community support.

Outpatient Treatment

Thanks to advances in the way drugs are delivered to the body and the development of new drugs to combat side effects, some chemotherapy treatments can be administered on an outpatient basis.

The Ireland Cancer Center Ambulatory Unit is dedicated solely to outpatient treatment. This state-of-the-art complex includes specially designed separate exam and consultation suites, a "day" hospital for administering chemotherapy to both adult and pediatric patients and on-site laboratory and pharmacy services. The facility also includes a comfortable waiting area for family and friends, a child’s play area and a complete cancer resource library with free literature on various types of cancer and current treatment methods. For the convenience of patients, outpatient chemotherapy can also be administered at one of several Ireland Cancer Center community-based centers in northeast Ohio.
