What is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?

For many reasons, the pelvic floor muscles may become weak, uncoordinated, contracted, or painful. The result can be symptoms such as pelvic pain, abdominal pain, discomfort with bladder or bowel elimination, pain during intercourse, urinary urgency/frequency and bowel or bladder incontinence. These conditions can have a significant impact on a woman’s overall comfort and quality of life.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can occur at any age. The most common causes include childbirth, surgery, physical trauma, emotional trauma, and long term habits of faulty posture and movement. Although most women are hesitant to speak about their symptoms to family and friends, according to the National Institutes of Health an estimated one-third of U.S. women are affected.
