Technical Skills Training
Several times per year, a three-hour resident-teaching workshop is conducted instead of Friday morning lectures. The first session will occur during intern orientation and will focus on the essentials for being on labor and delivery and in the operating room. Basic surgical skills from suture and instrument selection, to knot tying and suturing will be covered. The other sessions will feature one-on-one faculty and resident interactions focused around a specific skill, area of knowledge, or focused clinical experience. Workshop topics are targeted toward different resident levels and may include case-based teaching topics and surgical skills simulation, such as laparoscopy and laser.

Resident Laparoscopic Education Program

The residency program offers a structured laparoscopic laboratory and training program as part of the formal resident teaching series. Under the supervision of Dr. Sandra Dayaratna and Dr. Kristin Zanotti, the goal of the Ob/Gyn laparoscopic education program is to improve resident's skills, speed, and proficiency in laparoscopic techniques in a skills laboratory, in order to maximize the clinical surgical experience. Residents use simulated surgical techniques with alphabet pieces, coffee beans, strings, and other devices in order to improve surgical proficiency and improve eye hand coordination and comfort level with instruments. The goal is to establish proficiency in basic tasks before entering the operating room to increase the resident's focus on the surgery rather than struggling to accomplish basic tasks.

CREOG Examination
All residents take the CREOG In-Training Examination in January of each year. The purpose of the exam is to help guide faculty and residents in terms of their future educational needs. Performance on this exam is predictive of your future ability to pass the written American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology exam.

Mock Oral Examinations
Mock oral exams are given once per year in the spring. This exam is 30 minutes in length, and faculty will be paired as examinees. The structure of the examination will simulate ABOG Oral Board Examination formats. Examiners are asked not to give resident examinees any verbal or visual feedback. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your ability to think through clinical scenarios "on your feet" and to practice for the “real” oral boards.
